Dads play an extremely important role in the confidence of their children. Words of affirmation, attitudes of encouragement, and consistent presence teach a child that she is important and play a significant role in the choices she makes later in life. Here are some ideas on how to build your child’s confidence:
1) Do what they enjoy. Giving your child the chance to try different things allows him to find what he is good at and what he likes to do. As he discovers what he enjoys, tell him he is good at what he does and give him more opportunities to use his talents.
2) Look for the good. Spend more time talking about what she does well and less on what she has done wrong. Ask her what she appreciates about what she has accomplished.
3) Show off. Display artwork, photos, certificates and other mementos. Share his success stories with relatives and friends. And do it in front of him so he hears you and knows what you feel.
4) Mistakes can be teachable moments. Help your child see her mistakes as opportunities to grow and improve. Let her know about mistakes you have made and how you handled them.
